Sulukule, one of Istanbul’s historical districts, is home to many lower-income and disadvantaged families. In the midst of a tedious urban renewal project, the area has offered little opportunities to its residents, several of them Roma, internal migrants and refugees.
Founded by local volunteers, SGD aims to minimise school dropouts and improve the quality of life of Sulukule residents through various means:
The NGO offers weekly workshops to students with dropout potential, provides disadvantaged students with free meals and works directly with teachers to enhance child safety. SGD’s workshops centers socio-emotional learning through storytelling, music and body movement.
Additionally, SGD provides adolescents with tutoring and offers literacy workshops for the local women.
Dalyan supports several SGD workshops.
