Kattaikkuttu Sangam

Transforming culture and lives through Kattaikkuttu theatre

women

Kattaikkuttu is a very complex, physical and expressive form of rural theatre practiced in the State of Tamil Nadu in South India.

The organisation Kattaikkuttu Sangam was founded 1990 as a non-profit association of professional theatre performers. Their goal is to strengthen the artistic scope and the validation of Kattaikkuttu. With integration of liberal education and performing arts, they promote Kattaikkuttu as rural contemporary theatre form. The aim of the association is to ensure sustainable careers for its professional performers and to build a new generation of young, talented players. A specific mission is also to establish young women in rural theatres as performers and foster the acceptance of mixed ensembles within rural and urban audiences.

Kattaikuttu Sangam consistently tries to develop alternative business ideas. In 2019, it started two new projects: the implementation of a sustainable fruit forest garden and the promotion of a guest house for artistic courses and workshops. Dalyan gives core cost support during the year Kattaikkuttu works on their new strategy.
